Event Description

Celebrate Puanga and Matariki with a special two-day community event led by local people from Wainuiomata.

Day one: Join us on Pito One Beach (opposite Cuba Street) at dawn to observe the maramataka, look for Puanga and Matariki in the sky, and remember loved ones who have passed since last year's rising. Following the beach gathering, enjoy breakfast and a day of learning, creativity and connection at Petone Beach Kindergarten, 20 King Street.

Throughout the event, there will be opportunities to learn about Te Waka a Rangi, the stars of Matariki and their significance, including this year's focus on Waitī. Enjoy kapa haka performances, bone carving workshops, elei printing, planting activities, shared kai and hands-on experiences for tamariki and whānau.

Day two: From 10am at Wainuiomata Community Hall for kaumātua and whānau celebration, with waiata, bingo, live music, a hāngī and time to connect across generations.

This long-running community event celebrates Puanga, Matariki, te taiao and the importance of learning, sharing knowledge and spending time together. Bring your whānau and join us in celebrating this special time of year.
